Another FSA Power Punch

fuel surcharge adjustmentConsumers must brace themselves for yet another instalment of the unending series of FSA (fuel surcharge adjustment) being imposed on them.

Barely four days after the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission permitted power utilities to pass on a Rs 609-crore burden to consumers, the four state discoms submitted a fresh FSA proposal for the fourth quarter of 2012-13. The proposal of all four discoms put together is for Rs 1,137 crore, which will translate to an additional Rs 1 per unit.

FSA instalments have hiked the electricity bills for all categories of consumers by 50 to 60 per cent. Read more

Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s judicial remand extended till May 13

Y_S_Jaganmohan_ReddyA special CBI court today extended till May 13 the judicial remand of YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others accused in connection with alleged quid-pro-quo deals in the assets case.

Jagan and the others accused, including ex-minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao, industrialist Nimmagadda Prasada and senior bureaucrat K V Brahmananda Reddy (all accused in Vanpic aspect of the Jagan assets case), who are currently lodged in Chanchalguda prison, were produced before the CBI court through video-conferencing.

Andhra Pradesh Minister Dhramana Prasad Rao, who is also an accused in the case, appeared before the court. Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested by CBI on corruption charges on May 27 last year. Read more

Govt allows Airlines to Charge Extra

flightIn a move that would raise air fares, the government today said it has allowed airlines to charge passengers extra for preferred seats on a flight, check-in baggage and meals, among other things.

“Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has decided to permit scheduled airlines to unbundle certain services and to charge fees for these services separately,” an official release said.

The services for which the airlines would be free to charge passengers include preferential seating, meals, snacks, drinks (barring drinking water), check-in baggage, use of airline lounges, sports equipment and musical instruments and valuable baggage which have higher carrier liability. Lack of sleep may reduce a man's sperm countLack of sleep can reduce a person’s sperm count by up to a fourth in addition to reducing their quality, a new study warns.

Researchers found that men who slept poorly had lower sperm counts and fewer sperm that had formed correctly, compared with men who slept better.

“Given the facts that approximately 20 per cent of all young men may have reduced semen quality, and that sleep disturbances are common and increasing in industrialised countries, the results of this study may have important public health implications,” researchers said. Read more
