India’s largest nuclear reactor at Kudankulam started generating electricity on a commercial basis from Wednesday.
Reportedly, the1000 MW reactor made with Russian assistance is generating electricity only on experimental basis after its turbine suffered damage a few months ago.
Though the unit has been running at full capacity of 1,000 MW since last ten days, the commercial operation would get KNPP better tariff from the grid, KNPP Station Director R S Sundar said.
In July last year, the first unit attained criticality and has been generating power and connected to the southern grid.
A women’s group in Gothivli village near Rabale kicked up a controversy this week by issuing an order banning women from wearing nightgowns outside their homes, calling it an “indecent practice” and imposing a fine of Rs 500 on those flouting its diktat.
The women in the group, called Indrayani Mahila Mandal, are the original inhabitants of the village, which has seen an influx of migrants from different parts of the country in recent years.
The women’s group used the notice boards of the village committee on Monday night to issue the directive. Soon there was an uproar in the village, which falls under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation jurisdiction. Read more

A bill to convert three Schools of Planning and Architecture into centres of excellence and enable them to confer degrees to its students was introduced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
The School of Planning and Architecture Bill, 2014 was introduced in the House by HRD Minister Smriti Irani.
Its passage will especially benefit students of SPA Bhopal and Vijayawada who are still awaiting their degrees.
These two institutes were set up in 2008-2009. To confer degree to graduates, the institute has to be so authorised under an Act of the Parliament or declared a ‘Deemed to be University’ by UGC. Read more

The price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was on Monday cut by a sharp Rs 113 per cylinder and that of jet fuel (ATF) by 4.1 per cent on the back of slump in international oil rates.
This is the fifth straight reduction in rates of non-subsidised LPG, which the customers buy after exhausting their quota of 12 cylinders at subsidised rates, since August.
A 14.2-kg cylinder of non-subsidised LPG will now cost Rs 752 in Delhi, Rs 791 in Kolkata, Rs 770.50 and Mumbai and Rs 749.50 in Chennai. Read more
